Ellen Tisdale is a Winnipeg artist, working mainly in acrylic, often incorporating mixed media. Ellen completed her B.F.A. in 2011, where she was awarded the Highest Standing in the Studio program.
Ellen’s work explores spiritual experiences of the natural world. Shifting between realism and abstraction, these images celebrate strange beauties. With playful shapes and colour, the work explores concepts such as what is holy, beyond a standard religious context. Her hope is that the work can shift the viewer’s perspective, remind us of our connection to the unseen, and encourage viewers to engage with the world beyond a purely materialistic lens. Also, sometimes she just makes a silly one.
Growing up in the fields of Manitoba and the rocky shores of western Ontario, Ellen developed a strong admiration for the majesty of the natural world, which she tries to capture in her art. Since completing her degree in Fine Arts, she has lived in Leipzig, Germany, and traveled throughout Europe and around North America, in an effort to learn from artists everywhere and improve her craft.
Mythology, folklore, and spiritual paths are all sources of inspiration for Ellen, and she often tries to explore metaphysical ideas in visual form. Spirits and strange creatures can often be found in her work, as well as the curious, the funny, and the absurd. Ellen enjoys working with a subtle blending of fantasy and reality, and exploring different visions of the way the world could be.
